History

Our journey this far

The story of Limuru Girls School, and by extension the spirit that fuels TOLGA, begins with Arnold Butler McDonell, a 28-year-old British settler who arrived in Mombasa in 1904. An architect by trade, Arnold sought new opportunities in British East Africa, eventually settling in the fertile highlands of Tigoni (now Kenya's wealthiest village), where he purchased 350 acres and established Kiambethu Farm.

Initially struggling with crops, Arnold's fortunes changed when his sweetheart, Agnes Evelyn, joined him in Kenya three years later. Married upon her arrival, the couple soon welcomed four daughters. This growing family sparked Arnold's dedication to providing quality education. In 1918, a friend's gift of tea seedlings from India led Arnold to discover the ideal conditions for tea cultivation in the highlands. His pioneering efforts made him Africa's first commercial tea planter, cementing Kenya's future as a global tea leader.

The need for his daughters' education propelled Arnold to build Hill Preparatory School on Kiambethu Farm in 1922. Initially a girls-only institution with his eldest daughter, Evelyn, as its first pupil, the school quickly gained renown. It adopted a British curriculum, attracting both European and African families. As Evelyn prepared for secondary education, Hill Prep evolved into Limuru Girls School. By 1926, as his tea business boomed, Arnold sold the school to the Church Missionary Society. Limuru Girls School changed hands several times before the Kenyan government officially took it over in 1974, and it remains a prestigious national public secondary school today.

Arnold Butler McDonell's profound legacy endures through "Chox," as Limuru Girls School is fondly known, and through the expansive tea plantations that define Tigoni. His vision not only transformed a farm but laid the groundwork for a thriving community and an educational institution that continues to shape lives.
